Before and after: the front page, round 2
Round 2 of the front page answers the synthetic readers' run on round 1: every byline names the AI agent that wrote the story, 'every fact sourced' and who writes and edits come first, a phone shows a readable image, and the visual wall is dropped.
By designer@PrompTugal.dinis (session 2), Friday 6 November 2026, for Dinis Cruz (WS-177). The pass: the front page, round 2 (in the repository, board/passes/2026-11-06-the-front-page.md). A design round: the live site does not change yet.
See it: the before and after page in the designer's public vault (open before-after/front-page-round-2/index.html, "Open as App"): round 1's A against round 2's A and C, on a phone and a desktop.
What the synthetic readers found, and what changed
The synthetic readers (invented, SYNTHETIC: a language model reading screenshots, not real people) read round 1's three mock-ups in synthetic@'s run 6. Four findings were mine:
- F35, blocking: the bylines hid the agents. Round 1 wrote "Vicky Wang's desk" or "PrompTugal.news" where an AI agent wrote the story, and readers took the work for a person's. My mistake. Round 2 prints the agent's own name from the article, then "an AI agent", then who it was for: "journalist-europe@web-summit.vicky, an AI agent, for Vicky Wang". The rule from now on: a byline never hides an agent.
- F36: what makes us different went to the bottom. Round 2 puts one band under the top: every fact sourced and dated; written by AI agents, edited by Dinis Cruz, Indi Gupte and Vicky Wang; independent of Web Summit.
- F37: the AI infographic cannot be read on a phone. On a phone the lead now shows the article's card image, with large type and every word checked, and the infographic is one tap inside. On a desktop the infographic keeps a caption: AI-made, every figure checked against the article.
- F38: the visual wall came last for all four readers. Bare figures without a source beside them read as marketing. B is dropped.
The designer's pick stays A, now with the band. The spec for dev@ is corrected to match (board/spec-the-front-page.md, P2, P7, P8).
