In short

  • Web Summit started in Dublin in 2009. In 2010 it was a meet-up for about 400 people, according to Wikipedia.
  • It moved to Lisbon in 2016, when 53,056 people came. It has been there every year since, except 2020, when it was held online.
  • Last year set a record: 71,386 attendees from 157 countries, 1,857 investors and 2,725 startups, according to the organisers, as reported by AICEP.
  • The agreement to hold it in Lisbon runs to 2028, as reported by Lusa.
  • This week, Portugal Tech Week opened on 6 November. No side event held earlier this week could be confirmed.

The story

Web Summit has been coming to Lisbon since 2016. Its story is older.

It began in Dublin in 2009, with bloggers, journalists and technologists in a hotel. In 2010 it was a meet-up for about 400 people from the local tech community. It then grew fast: 4,200 people in 2012, over 10,000 in 2013, 22,000 from 109 countries in 2014, and over 42,000 in 2015. These figures are from Wikipedia.

In 2016 the summit moved to Lisbon, to the MEO Arena and the FIL, at the Expo '98 site. That first Lisbon edition drew 53,056 attendees from more than 150 countries and more than 1,500 startups, according to Wikipedia. Attendance reached 70,000 in 2018. In 2020 the summit went online, and it came back to Parque das Nações in 2021.

Last year was the biggest yet. Web Summit 2025 had a record 71,386 attendees from 157 countries, the organisers said, as reported by AICEP, Portugal's trade and investment agency. There were 1,857 investors from 86 countries, up 74% on 2024. And 2,725 startups came from 108 countries, 40% of them with women among their founders.

It is set to stay. The agreement to hold the summit in Lisbon, made in 2018, covers every year from 2019 to 2028, as reported by Lusa.

This week so far. Portugal Tech Week opened on 6 November and runs to 15 November, according to its own site, with events across the country. Its main venue, the PTW Palace, opens on 9 November. Several online lists of side events also mention gatherings earlier this week, but this article could not confirm any of them at a source of their own.

Coming back after a few years? The edition pages on this site show how each year looked, from Dublin 2010 to Lisbon 2025.

What this does not claim

  • Wikipedia is the source for most of the history. It is an encyclopedia, not a primary source, and this article did not check its figures against each edition's own report. Its summary box is out of date: it still calls 2024 the most recent edition.
  • The 2025 figures are the organisers', as reported by AICEP. The newsroom has not counted them.
  • No side event held before 6 November is reported here. The lists found online disagree with each other, and none was checked at an organiser's own page.
  • This is about size and places. Disputes in the summit's past, which Wikipedia also records, are not covered here.
