Web Summit 2026 in numbers: 70,000 people, 10,000 startups
The size of Web Summit Lisbon 2026 in Web Summit's own figures, how it picks its startups, and what its first State of the Industry survey found about AI at work.

In short
- Web Summit expects more than 70,000 attendees from more than 100 countries in Lisbon, from 9 to 12 November, including 10,000 startups.
- It lists 800 speakers and 17 content tracks over four days, from AI and cybersecurity to health, energy and sport.
- The startup programme is selective: in 2025, over 22,000 startups applied and about 2,700 got in, according to Web Summit.
- Its first State of the Industry survey, of 1,455 people in its community, found most think AI sharpens their thinking (55%) but adds to their workload (60%).
- Last year's summit had 71,386 attendees from 157 countries, as reported by Lusa and ApexBrasil.
The story
The week. Web Summit Lisbon runs from 9 to 12 November in the MEO Arena and FIL.
The stage. The speakers page lists 800 speakers, "from AI to robotics, from China to Silicon Valley, and beyond". There are 17 content tracks over four days, from AI, cybersecurity and finance to the future of work, software development, energy, health and sport. Every ticket covers them all, Web Summit says.
The startups. Of over 22,000 applicants in 2025, about 2,700 were accepted, Web Summit says. There are three groups by stage: ALPHA for those with under 1 million dollars in funding, BETA for those that have launched successfully, and GROWTH for those expanding globally, often with more than 3 million dollars raised. Web Summit says it looks for a product relevant to attendees, a strong team, growth potential and a clear plan for the event.
Investors after later-stage companies could start with GROWTH startups. First-time founders will find their peers in the ALPHA group.
Last year. In 2025 the summit had 71,386 attendees from 157 countries and 1,857 investors, as reported by Lusa, citing the organisers, and in ApexBrasil's mission rules. ApexBrasil's rules add 869 speakers and 2,725 startups.
What the community thinks about AI. Web Summit's first State of the Industry survey, published on 22 October, polled 1,455 founders, investors, engineers and creators across its community. Its findings, as Web Summit reports them:
- 55% say AI strengthens their critical thinking, 19% see no difference and 26% say it weakens it. Engineers are the most sceptical (37% say it weakens it).
- 60% say AI has increased their workload; 20% say it has reduced it.
- 39% expect headcount in their field to grow over the next two years; 33% expect it to fall. For entry-level jobs, 42% expect fewer.
- Most use several AI providers: 2.3 on average; 43% use three or more.
- Only about 1 in 10 think AI investment will fall sharply.
- 42% expect smaller teams to produce more; 9% think teams will grow.
- 41% of women say emotional intelligence will matter more (27% of men). 38% of men point to technical depth (24% of women).
Web Summit's SVP of Technology Operations, Nidhi Naithani, said the study shows "people are divided about a future with AI". Naithani noted that engineers, who build these systems, are the group most worried about job security.
What this does not claim
- All the 2026 figures are Web Summit's own, given before the event. PrompTugal.news has not counted them. The final numbers will be known after the summit.
- "10,000 startups" is Web Summit's figure for this year's attendees. It is a different measure from the about 2,700 startups accepted into the 2025 startup programme, and this article does not compare them.
- The 2025 figures come from a Lusa report, which cites the organisers, and from ApexBrasil's mission rules, which name no source. This article did not find them on a Web Summit page.
- The survey's method. Web Summit gives the number of respondents (1,455) and says they are from its global community. It does not say how they were chosen, so the findings describe that community, not the whole industry. The full report was not read for this article.
- The speakers page. "800 speakers" is the page's own description, read on 5 November; the lineup may change.
- Web Summit's value to Portugal's economy is not covered here. It is a separate story.

One change: "in Parque das Nações" was dropped from the venue line, because no source listed here names it (Web Summit gives the address as Rossio dos Olivais).
