Tuesday 10 November: Europe on stage, universities pitching, first-timers meeting

On Tuesday 10 November a European Commission Executive Vice-President speaks on Centre Stage, nine Portuguese universities hold a pitch day and first-time attendees have a meetup of their own. Two of the three clash, so newcomers will have to choose.

In short

  • Three things on Tuesday 10 November suit different people: Europe's tech policy on Centre Stage, a pitch day for university startups, and a meetup for first-timers.
  • Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen has a fireside chat, "Has Europe's tech moment arrived?", on Centre Stage from 11:05 to 11:25, the Commission says. A Commission masterclass on data spaces follows at 12:00.
  • Web Summit lists a "First timers at Web Summit meetup" from 11:00 to 11:55 in Meetup 4. It overlaps the fireside chat, so a newcomer has to pick one.
  • The University of Lisbon hosts UniVerse: Academia Empreendedora, with a pitch competition for startups from nine Portuguese universities. Its stand (Pavilion 1) and Técnico's (Pavilion 2, E272) open the same day.
  • The links are our suggestions. No source says any of these organisations plan to meet.

The story

Web Summit Lisbon runs from 9 to 12 November. On Tuesday the 10th, three events stand out.

Europe on Centre Stage

The Commission's digital department, DG Connect, is at Web Summit from 10 to 12 November, it says. On Tuesday, Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen joins a fireside chat on Centre Stage, from 11:05 to 11:25: "Has Europe's tech moment arrived?". According to the Commission, the talk covers the EU's drive for tech sovereignty, from AI and cloud to chips and digital infrastructure, and how the EU regulates platforms and AI systems.

At 12:00, until 12:45, DG Connect runs a masterclass, "Data spaces for SMEs: Turning shared data into value". The Commission says it covers how small and medium-sized businesses can access and use data from connected products, and the support available at EU level.

The Commission lists stands: DG GROW at E415 and HaDEA at E418, both in Pavilion 4, and EuroHPC at E405.

Universities pitching

The University of Lisbon (ULisboa) hosts the second UniVerse: Academia Empreendedora on 10 November, at the Portugal Pavilion Congress Centre. Nine Portuguese higher education institutions take part: the University of Lisbon, NOVA University Lisbon, and the Universities of Aveiro, Coimbra, Évora, Madeira, Minho, Beira Interior and Porto. There is a pitch competition for their startups, a demo and exhibition area, networking and a performance by the ZABRA collective, ULisboa says.

Two university stands open the same day, until 12 November: ULisboa's in Pavilion 1 and Técnico's in Pavilion 2 (E272). Técnico, ULisboa's engineering school, brings six spin-offs: Acubic, Keel, Opsivision.ai, RTBEAMTECH, RipeNew and Testwaves. Técnico says one more of its startups, still to be chosen when it wrote, will take part in UniVerse.

First-timers meeting

The meetup's page on Web Summit's schedule says: "Calling all first-timers at Web Summit: your people are here!" It invites them to "Exchange insights, discuss challenges, and expand your network."

Where the day overlaps

The fireside chat (11:05 to 11:25) falls inside the meetup (11:00 to 11:55): a newcomer cannot be at both. The data spaces masterclass starts at 12:00, five minutes after the meetup ends, so the two can be done back to back, if the rooms are close enough.

Who might get the most from the day

These are our suggestions, from the public listings above; none is planned by the organisations named.

  • A first-time founder could start at the first-timers meetup and go on to the data spaces masterclass at 12:00, which is aimed at small businesses.
  • Anyone following EU tech policy would want Centre Stage at 11:05, then the Commission's stands in Pavilion 4.
  • Investors and companies looking for university spin-offs have two university stands, in Pavilions 1 and 2, and UniVerse's pitch competition.
  • University startups at UniVerse or on Técnico's stand are in Lisbon on the same day as the Commission's sessions on EU support for businesses. HaDEA's stand is in Pavilion 4.

What this does not claim

  • No meetings are planned that we know of. Every link above is our suggestion. No source says the Commission, the universities, Web Summit's meetup hosts or any startup plan to meet or work together.
  • Times are as each organiser lists them. Web Summit's schedule data gives its times in Lisbon time (Europe/Lisbon, the same as UTC in November). The Commission's agenda does not say; we take its times to be Lisbon time too. Schedules can change; check Web Summit's app on the day.
  • Where the masterclass is held is not given. The Commission lists its time but not its stage or room, so we cannot say how far it is from Meetup 4.
  • The Virkkunen fireside chat comes from the Commission's page. We did not find it on the part of Web Summit's schedule page we read.
  • UniVerse's time and exact venue are not given beyond "the Portugal Pavilion Congress Centre" (ULisboa) and "Pavilhão de Portugal" on "the first day of the event" (Técnico). We do not say whether it is inside the Web Summit venue, or how far it is from it.
  • Which startups pitch at UniVerse is not known. Neither university lists them.
  • The days the Commission's stands are open are not stated stand by stand; the Commission says only that DG Connect is at Web Summit from 10 to 12 November.
  • Nothing is said about the spin-offs' products. The sources name them and nothing more.
  • Everything about the fireside chat and masterclass is the Commission's description. Everything about UniVerse and the stands is the universities' own.
